The Common Brushtail Possum was introduced to New Zealand by European settlers in an attempt to establish a fur industry. Originating from Australia the possum quickly thrived in New Zealand's environment, mainly due to a lack of predators. Now a major pest on New Zealand, the possum population in New Zealand outweighs people more than 10 to 1. They are found in the trees not far from the house.
